Textbooks

A textbook is not one long document — it is a set of coordinated volumes with a table of contents, page numbering conventions, indexes, and cross-references that all have to line up so a student can follow along in the same class as their sighted peers. Christy takes on full-textbook projects and manages that coordination end-to-end.

What’s included

• Volume planning — the print book is divided into braille volumes of reasonable size, with volume breaks placed at natural chapter or section boundaries wherever possible.
• Formatting per current guidelines — headings, running heads, page numbering (both print page indicators and braille page numbers), lists, sidebars, and boxed content.
• Coordinated codes — literary text in UEB, math and science in Nemeth, chemistry notation where present, and music sections where present, all handled within the same project.
• Tactile graphics for figures, diagrams, and maps where they support the reader’s understanding.
• Faithful navigation — table of contents, chapter openers, and indexes transcribed so a student can find things the same way sighted peers do.
• Deliverables suitable for embossing or reading on a refreshable braille display (BRF), per the school’s preference.

Good candidates

K–12 and post-secondary textbooks in the areas Christy transcribes: literary, math and science (Nemeth), chemistry, and music. Textbook projects are scoped up front with the requesting district or program — send the print edition (ISBN and any accompanying materials) and a target timeline, and Christy will provide a scope and volume estimate.
