School Maps

Learning a new school is one of the first orientation-and-mobility (O&M) tasks a blind or low-vision student takes on each year. A well-made tactile map turns a stressful navigation problem into something a student can study before they walk it — and refer back to when a schedule or room assignment changes.

What’s included

• Campus maps — outdoor layout, main paths, building entrances, drop-off zones, and orientation landmarks.
• Building maps — floor plans with rooms, corridors, doors, stairwells, elevators, restrooms, and exits.
• Consistent symbol set across the map series, with a key/legend so a student can transfer skills from one map to the next.
• Braille labels for room numbers, teacher names, and named landmarks — placed to be findable without clutter.
• Hazards and controlled areas clearly marked (e.g. stairwell locations, restricted zones).
• Coordination with the O&M instructor so the map matches how the student is actually being taught to move through the space.

Good candidates

New-student orientation, mid-year schedule changes, campus additions or renovations, and any student transitioning between school buildings. Provide current print floor plans (from the district or facilities) plus the O&M instructor’s contact, and Christy will scope the map series and turnaround.
